The Problem
For me, the FootJoy Premiere Series Packards are without a doubt the most beautiful golf shoes on the market and the best I’ve ever owned. However, the textured leather upper is a nightmare to try and keep clean, especially as the shoes get older. I’ve owned my Packards for over a year now and used to wipe them down after every round in order to keep them looking like new. Sadly, just like most of my New Year resolutions, that didn’t last long and I was back to just throwing them in the garage in the hope they’d magically clean themselves in no time.
The problem I’ve discovered with the Packards, and indeed every other white golf shoe I’ve ever owned, is that if they aren’t cleaned after every round and the dirt builds up on them then they become really difficult to clean with the traditional soap and water method.
Thankfully, there’s a simple solution to keep your whites white and no, it’s not Daz Ultra.
The solution
The solution I’ve been using for the past few months that I now swear by involves cleaning my shoes with The Pink Stuff The Miracle Cleaning Paste. Created by the well-known and popular household cleaning brand ‘The Pink Stuff’, this ‘Miracle Cleaning Paste’ really does work miracles on tired-looking golf shoes and is a must have for any golfer keen to keep their golf shoes looking their best.
A 500g tub can be bought from Amazon for around £5 or can be picked up in the cleaning aisle of your local supermarket and will go a long, long way. I’ve cleaned my shoes using this paste several times and have barely even broken its surface.
In terms of the product itself, it’s environmentally non-toxic, made from 99% natural ingredients and not tested on animals. The other piece of good news is that as well as being suitable for use on your golf shoes, you can also use it to clean your saucepans, sinks, shower and your boat (if you’re rich enough to have one).
One thing that is important to point out is that this is a mild abrasive paste cleaner and should be used with care. Personally, I have decided to use this on my golf shoes as they are a little bit older now and I’m not too concerned about potentially scoring the surface of the leather in the same way as I would have been if they were brand new shoes, given that the leather has already deteriorated over time.
What you will need
In my experience, to clean your golf shoes properly using miracle cleaning paste you will need:
- Tub of The Pink Stuff Miracle Cleaning Paste
- A soft toothbrush or scouring sponge
- Wet/surface wipes or damp wet cloth
The Cleaning Process
Now that we’ve looked at what equipment you’ll need, let’s take a look at the method I use to clean my golf shoes.
Step 1: Remove laces
Before you begin cleaning your shoes, I’d recommend first removing the laces from each shoe. Whilst the paste will be okay to apply to the laces, it makes it much easier to clean around the eyelets and the tongue once the laces have been removed.
Step 2: Apply miracle paste
Scrape a generous portion of the paste onto the tip of the toothbrush or scouring sponge and begin working it into the leather upper of the shoe in small circular motions. You don’t need to be forceful or too rough when applying the paste.
Continue to apply the paste to any and all areas above the sole. The main benefit of using a toothbrush to apply the paste is that it makes it easier to get into all of the nooks and crannies and makes cleaning the shoe’s tongue less fiddly than trying to use a sponge.
Step 3: Wipe off the paste
Once you have finished working the paste into leather across the entire shoe, it’s time to remove it. Grab a wet wipe or damp cleaning cloth and begin to remove the paste from the shoe. The wetter the wipe/cloth, the easier it will be to remove the paste.
It’s at this point you’ll really be able to see just how good a job this miracle paste does of removing dirt and returning your shoes to their former glory.
Step 4: Wipe outsole and lace shoes
Once the upper has been wiped and all of the paste removed, the final part of the process is to clean the outsole and heel before lacing each shoe. I don’t tend to apply the paste to the outsole or heel as I usually find they’re easy enough to clean with a wet wipe or your damp cloth.
