AMVR Q3GP1 Golf Club Attachment Review: The only way to play Golf+ VR

Table of Contents
If you’ve played Golf+ VR on the Meta Quest Q3 or Q3S, you’ll already know how fun it can be. But with a golf club attachment for your controller, you can dramatically improve the experience. In this short review, we’ll look at one option in particular, the AMVR Q3GP1, a simple, affordable, but highly effective VR golf club attachment that promises to take your Golf+ VR experience to the next level.

About the AMVR Q3GP1

The AMVR Q3GP1 golf club attachment retails at $39.99 (use code “ANDYSGOLFBLOG” to save 10%) and is available for worldwide shipping. It’s compatible with the popular Golf+ VR game and is carefully designed to ensure that every movement is tracked by the VR headset. It weighs 257g and measures only 15.75”, making it perfect for indoor use.

Packaging

In terms of packaging, it really is quite basic. The print quality of the imagery on the front of the box is quite poor, looking more like it was printed on a home office printer. That said, it’s a direct-to-consumer product, so there’s really no need for it to be Apple-esque in my opinion. Another slight gripe with the packaging is that the attachment is sealed in a plastic bag inside the box. To be honest, this is an unnecessary use of plastic that ultimately ends up in a landfill.

Aside from these two minor points, the attachment was securely and neatly packaged, and everything arrived in one piece, so I can’t really have any complaints in that regard.

Build quality and setup

Despite the slightly underwhelming outer packaging, the actual product made a strong first impression. In terms of build quality, the AMVR Q3GP1 is excellent. Given the packaging’s quality and the fact that it costs less than $40, I wasn’t expecting much, but the build quality really surprised me. There are no sharp plastic pieces or rough edges, and the moulding is smooth, neat and tidy.

For example, the attachment’s grip is comfortable to hold, tacky, and has a premium feel similar to the Golf Pride MultiCompound grip it’s clearly modelled on. Whilst it’s not a standard golf grip from a leading brand like Lamkin or Golf Pride, it still feels convincing. Interestingly, these replica grips often have a really strong, unpleasant smell, but there’s none of that with this grip, which is important given it’s in constant contact with your skin and will mainly be kept and used indoors. By using a premium-feeling grip and keeping the shaft diameter the same as a standard golf club, it really does feel like you’re holding a real golf club, albeit just a good bit lighter (more on this below).

When it comes to setting up these attachments, some are easy and intuitive, while others are not. Thankfully, the Q3GP1 is the former, thanks to its straightforward, easy-to-follow instructions. By following the numbered instructions and images, I was able to fit and secure my controller into the attachment in less than one minute.

Whilst I’ve praised the high-quality finish of the AMVR Q3GP1, there is one very slight drawback with its design. Unlike other attachments I’ve tested, with this one, you have to remove the standard Meta Quest battery cover and replace it with the AMVR cover.

This cover has a custom slot which allows the grip buckle to be secured. It does a great job of keeping the controller securely attached to the attachment, but it means you need to make sure you keep the original controller battery cover safe after removing it.

Finally, to give it an extra layer of security, the wrist cord is wrapped around the knob at the bottom, which is then turned clockwise to tighten. This keeps the controller securely fastened to the attachment, which is vital when you’re swinging it at high speeds inside your living room.

Performance and immersion

In gameplay with Golf+ VR, the AMVR Q3GP1 worked really well. I was able to find and select the specific AMVR club attachment preset in the game’s settings menu, and I liked that no setup or calibration was required. All I had to do was locate the AMVR preset, connect, and head to the driving range. It is worth noting that calibration options are available if needed, but during my testing, calibration wasn’t necessary.

The Golf+ VR game responds very well to movements with the attachment, picking them up straight away. For example, lifting the club up or down, opening and closing the face, or changing the club head’s position are all updated in real time in the game, and it’s incredibly reactive. With the headset on and the attachment in your hand, it feels like you’re holding a real golf club and standing on the tee, fairway or green of a real golf course.

The length of the attachment is 15.75”, which is roughly half the size of a standard wedge. The short length of the attachment is actually ideal because it means you can comfortably swing it inside your house without taking out a light fitting or a wall (assuming you’ve checked there are none nearby). The shorter club length does take a little bit of getting used to, as it doesn’t sit on the ground, meaning that you need to adjust the ball position in the game as you play. Generally speaking, assuming you’re remaining in roughly the same spot, you’ll only have to do this a few times, and it only involves the long-press of a button, so it takes no time at all.

At this point, I think it’s important to remind you that you don’t play a VR game like GOLF+ to become better at real golf. You play it for fun, but using an attachment like the AMVR Q3GP1 makes the game much more enjoyable than just holding the standard VR controllers, as you can see in the above video. Whilst it’s not fully realistic in the sense of having the exact same swing mechanics, it does a brilliant job in making you feel like you are genuinely swinging a club, hitting a ball, and standing out on the golf course, a feeling you really cannot get if you’re only using the controllers and not a golf club attachment.

Regarding issues with the Q3GP1, I only have two very minor grumbles. The first is that it can be a little difficult to use the controller to navigate the headset’s menus because the controller is cradled in the attachment, which took me a while to get used to.

Secondly, the attachment is slightly lighter than the others I’ve tested. At 275g and half the length of a standard wedge, it does feel quite a lot lighter than a standard golf club when you swing. Whilst it’s certainly not a game-changer, it is something to be aware of if you’re playing a lot of golf on the VR as well as out on the course – it might take some time between both to adjust. This is certainly something I’ve heard other Golf+ players mention when discussing experiences.

What's good, and what could be better

Let’s take a closer look at the main areas where the AMVR Q3GP1 excels and where I think it could be improved.

Pros

  • Affordable and very well made, with high-quality construction.
  • Premium feeling golf grip similar to those found on real clubs.
  • The diameter of the shaft is similar to that of a standard golf club.
  • Completely secure fit with no rattling or movement during use.
  • Compact length that makes it safe for indoor use.
  • Clear and easy to follow instructions.
  • Preset already in Golf+ VR game with no calibration required.

Cons

  • A little more weight would make it even more realistic.
  • Replacing the battery cover adds an extra step and means you have to keep your original Meta Quest cover somewhere safe so you don’t lose it.
  • Packaging quality is not the best, and unnecessary excess plastic could be avoided.

Final thoughts

Put simply, the AMVR Q3GP1 is an excellent golf club attachment that makes your experience with GOLF+ VR infinitely better, especially if you’re playing with the standard controllers. It’s affordable, quick and easy to set up, durable, and just generally a really well-made, thought-out product. Yes, there are a couple of minor issues with the packaging, the battery cover, and weight, but if you can see past those (which I suggest you do), you’ll be hitting bombs (and hopefully not light fittings) in no time.
