How to use the TRS Slider golf training aid (setup and drills)

If you’ve just picked up the TRS Slider, congratulations. You now have one of the best golf swing training aids available. With some practise and the right drills, you’ll soon get rid of that over-the-top downswing and flipping at impact. This article will show you how to put on and position your TRS Slider, and how to get the most from it with two helpful practise drills.

After using the TRS Slider for several months, I noticed quick improvements in my swing and FlightScope data, which proved its value as a training aid.

Setting up your TRS Slider

The TRS Slider is simple and intuitive to use. To put it on for the first time, follow these steps:

  1. Slide your trail arm (right arm for right-handed golfers) through the pink arm loop. Position it just above your elbow on the lower bicep and fasten the velcro. Ensure it’s tight enough that it doesn’t move up and down on your arm.
  2. Strap the larger black band around your chest at the top of your rib cage, and secure it by fastening the clip at the front of your chest.
  3. At address, the band should feel snug but not restrictive. It’s important to check that the pink arm loop can still slide around the black chest band as you turn your torso. If it doesn’t slide, the black band might be too tight.

Now that you’ve got the band securely fastened and in the correct position, it’s time to get to work with some practise drills.

Essential TRS Slider drills for irons

I found the fastest way to get comfortable with the TRS Slider and see results was to use a lofted iron, such as an 8-iron. It also works with longer clubs like the driver, but it’s easier to start with shorter clubs and move to longer ones as you get used to it.

Rather than just going straight into hitting full shots as you normally would, try these short drills to begin with.

Drill 1: Develop a connected takeaway

This drill helps keep your trail arm close to your body during the backswing, preventing a steep swing.

  1. Take your normal stance with a short-iron.
  2. Take the club back slowly until it is parallel to the ground, focusing on keeping the TRS Slider quiet.
  3. If the Slider moves before the club is parallel, your elbow is likely lifting. Practise 10 slow takeaways, ensuring your arms move together.

Drill 2: Pump and drop

This drill stops your trail elbow from separating from your body early in the swing.

  1. Take your normal stance with a short iron.
  2. Swing to a three-quarter backswing, pause, then drop to parallel. Repeat twice. On the third drop, complete the swing and hit the ball.
  3. Focus on your trail elbow, making sure it stays close to your ribs. The Slider guides your arm; you’ll feel resistance if your arms cast outward.

Using the TRS Slider with a driver

Most golfers use the TRS Slider with irons, but it also works well with a driver. The feel is different than with irons, so you might need some time to adjust when swinging a driver with the Slider on.

With the TRS Slider and a driver, your hands stay in sync with your body’s rotation rather than lifting on their own. This helps fix a steep, over-the-top swing that often leads to slices. It may take time to get used to, but it leads to a more efficient and powerful driver swing. For more details, see my article about using the TRS Slider with a driver.

Where to buy the TRS Slider

As the TRS Slider has become more popular, lookalikes, fakes, and cheap replicas have started appearing on discount sites like Temu, AliExpress, and Amazon at much lower prices.

The TRS Slider is a premium product, built to handle strong swings and repeated use. Many fake versions use low-quality elastics and weak plastic clips. They may cost less, but as the saying goes, buy cheap, buy twice.
