Since its release in April 2024, the Shot Scope V5 has been a constant companion on my wrist, helping me track my scores and performance statistics across nearly 100 rounds of golf. During this time, I’ve come to know it inside out and have genuinely been blown away by how good this device is.
If, after reading this article, you’d like to buy the Shot Scope V5, it currently retails at £239.99. However, you can save 15% using my exclusive Shot Scope discount code, ANDYSGOLF.
You’ll find five of my favourite things about it below, but if you’re looking for my comprehensive analysis, check out my full Shot Scope V5 review based on my experience with it.
#1 - Turn up and play, without delay
Golf is supposed to be an enjoyable and relaxing pastime, so the last thing you want before teeing off is any stress or faff. The good news for users of the V5 is that the device comes pre-loaded with maps for over 42,000 golf courses worldwide. This means you can simply turn up at pretty much any golf course across the world and locate and connect to the course map in seconds. I’ve yet to play any golf course here in the UK that hasn’t been mapped. Generally speaking, I do tend to check for map updates within the app before playing, but there have been times when I’ve forgotten to do this and still had no issues locating and connecting to any courses I’ve played.
In the rare instance that a course hasn’t been mapped, the good news is that, as Shot Scope owns and conducts mapping in-house, they aim to map or remap courses within 24 hours – how’s that for service?
Whilst it might not seem like a big deal, knowing that you can head to the first tee and connect to the course without needing to perform updates, or worse, being unable to use the device at all, is very reassuring.
#2 - Automatic shot tracking
The Shot Scope V5 uses simple yet smart technology to track each shot as you plot your way around the golf course, giving you access to a wealth of performance statistics after your round. However, unlike many other shot-tracking devices on the market, the V5 captures each shot automatically so long as you have correctly fitted and assigned the club tags, and they are close enough to the watch strap. What I particularly like about the automatic tracking is that when playing your shot, you don’t need to do anything. No interaction with the watch or manual tagging is required – you can simply focus and fully commit to each and every shot.
The only interaction required for GPS positional tracking is a couple of button presses whilst standing over the hole after putting out, to capture the position of the hole. Aside from this, it’s all automated and I love it.
#3 - Hole maps and hazard information
This year, I’ve played several golf courses for the first time, and I’ve found the hazard and hole overview information on the V5 invaluable. One of the biggest challenges golfers face when playing a new course is working out where the danger lies on each hole, especially on doglegs or holes with elevation changes. This is where the V5’s hole overview maps come in handy.
For the hole you are currently playing, the V5 displays a full overview, showing the shape of the hole, the location and position of any hazards, and the remaining distance to the pin. Better still, you can adjust the distance marker up and down, allowing you to see how far you have to hit it from your current location to reach or clear specific points on the hole. I use this feature frequently for tee shots where finding the fairway is imperative.
In addition to the hole overview maps, the Hazard screen on the V5 is also a godsend. This feature displays all hazards on the current hole, indicating which side of the fairway or green each hazard lies on, and the distance to both reach and carry the hazard.
#4 - No subscription fees
These days, it feels like everything in life requires a monthly or annual subscription. Whether it’s your Ring doorbell or the printer in your office, I find it frustrating that you have to keep paying an ongoing fee just to use a product you’ve already spent a lot of money on.
Thankfully, Shot Scope agrees and does not charge subscription fees for any of its golf devices. So, whether you’ve bought the V5 golf watch, the incredibly popular Shot Scope LM1 launch monitor, or Shot Scope’s budget PRO L2 laser rangefinder, once you’ve bought it, you won’t be required to spend a penny more.
Not only that, but all firmware updates, including new features, bug fixes, and course mapping updates, are provided completely free of charge, meaning that your Shot Scope products just keep getting better and better.
#5 - Incredible performance statistics
I’ve used Shot Scope products for nearly 10 years and have owned and used every shot-tracking golf watch since the original V1 model. Even after all that time, as a single-figure handicap golfer, I still find the performance data you can access incredibly useful. After each round, all that’s required is a quick bit of post-round editing using the web editor or the Shot Scope mobile app, and you can view over 100 tour-level statistics about your golf game.
Whether you’re looking for basic information such as how far you hit each club on average or how often you three-putt, right through to a breakdown of how well you play a particular hole or where you are gaining or losing strokes, the level of performance data is unparalleled. Too many amateur golfers waste hours aimlessly hitting balls at the driving range without really understanding where they are losing strokes on the golf course. The Shot Scope performance data takes the guesswork out of the equation and shows you exactly where to focus your time and effort to improve your golf game.
